The objective of this group is to work towards the upholding
of democratic rights in Indian academic institutions.
We believe that academic institutions should be sites where one can
explore human ideas and knowledge in their fullest manifestation.
Therefore those who work in such institutions must be free to express
themselves, debate and organize discussions around such ideas. This
includes the freedom to express views that are critical of those in
positions of authority, whether at the institution itself, or in society.
Democratic rights also include the right to work in a dignified
workplace, free of discrimination.
These rights extend not only to students, and academic workers but to
all workers in the institution.
We recognize that academic institutions are only a microcosm of broader
society and should be no more privileged than other institutions. This
group focuses on academic institutions because that is where its members
are largely based.
